Embrace equity on International Women’s Day 2023

This is the first International Women’s Day since I have taken on the role of Senior Vice President of People & Culture here at Amadeus – and I was pleased to join the global Amadeus Women’s Network (AWN) event today to commemorate the cultural, political and socioeconomic achievements of women.

Part of my role at Amadeus is the promotion of diversity, equity and inclusion across our organization, something I consider an integral part of our culture and our wider success. Today, I want to personally thank the AWN for helping to spread this message, as well as for everything they have done these past few years, for starting many relevant conversations around these topics, for pushing us forward by creating many of their own initiatives and for helping us hold ourselves accountable.

Today’s event highlighted this year’stheme: #EmbraceEquity. Equity acknowledges that people do not begin life in the same place, and that circumstances can make it more difficult for different people to achieve the same goals. Today, inequity affects many people, but in the past, it has been most prevalent for marginalized communities, including women. International Women’s Day is about changing that, removing systemic and structural barriers that get in the way of an ability to thrive.

International Women’s Day this year focuses on embracing equity and how allies on this journey are important for the social, economic, cultural and political advancement of women.

Concrete steps

According to the United Nations, by 2050, three quarters of jobs will be related to STEM areas. Yet today, women hold just 22 percent of positions in artificial intelligence, to name just one of many STEM-related areas where women are underrepresented.

Bringing more women into technology has many upsides like the development of more creative solutions, greater potential for innovation, generally, but also in ways specifically addressing this community’s needs, and promotes gender equity.

In Bangalore, Amadeus ran a program to bring women back to the tech workforce after long absences from the office. Primarily aimed at mothers who had left the workforce, the program included a boot camp training program to re-skill and upskill the women. At the end of the program, 25 women were hired - and the project will be repeated again this year.

In Miami, Amadeus participated in a project to support young women from underrepresented communities studying technology. At the end of the program, two worked in internship roles at Amadeus. Meanwhile, in Nice, the AWN ran an internal mentoring program, with senior women in technology fields supporting more junior women in the development of their careers.

Looking ahead, we will be repeating these programs, along with other ones, to have more women in technology around the world.

We will also continue making Amadeus an amazing place to work: where we care about people, where we provide opportunities for growth and mobility. Where we offer flexibility and are recognized as a sustainable and ethically responsible company. We will continue to nurture our culture with a strong sense of purpose where people feel that they are cared for and that they can progress professionally.

The steps we take today are part of a wider journey toward equity for women all around the world. A long journey remains ahead, but I am proud to seek change here at Amadeus on International Women’s Day 2023.
